Devlog #1: Why I’m building "Flock" – A fresh start with AI-power

🎯️ The Vision: More than just an app

The name Flock says it all. In a world full of distractions, I want to create a digital space that helps people engage more deeply with the Bible.

Flock is designed to be the "Duolingo for Bible knowledge." My goal is to make learning verses and biblical facts so intuitive and motivating that it doesn't feel like work. Users are accompanied by Bo, a little sheep who guides them through the lessons in a playful way.

The Approach:

  • Gamified: Learning through various puzzle games and a smart flashcard system.
  • Thematic: We are starting with verse memorization; thematic chapters diving deeper into biblical topics will follow later.
  • For Everyone: The design is crafted to ensure both teenagers and adults enjoy the learning process.

✅ Current Status: What happened in just 3 days

I am amazed at how far the app has come in such a short time. Thanks to the experience from a previous attempt and the strategic use of AI agents, the core framework for verse learning is almost complete.

Core Features of the Prototype:

  • Verse Management: Users can create verses manually or add them automatically via a search function.
  • Learning Algorithm: A system of daily and weekly repetitions ensures that knowledge sticks in long-term memory.
  • Gamification: * Various puzzle games (word ordering, fill-in-the-blanks, etc.).
    • An XP & Level system to visualize progress.
    • Streaks & Leaderboards to compete with friends and stay motivated.

🛠️ Tech Deep-Dive: Why it’s faster this time

Last year, I tried this same project using Flutter and PocketBase and barely made progress over several weeks.

What changed?

  1. The Stack: I am now using React Native (Expo) and Convex for the backend. Since I am "at home" with TypeScript, development is much more efficient.
  2. AI Support: Using modern AI agents has massively increased development speed. I’ve achieved more in three days than I previously did in months.
  3. Experience: The lessons learned from the first attempt are now flowing directly into a cleaner architecture.

📈 The Road to MVP (Minimum Viable Product)

My current focus is on fully implementing the verse learning feature to get the app into the App Store soon. The more complex thematic lessons will follow after the initial release.

Next Steps:

  • UX & Onboarding: How does Bo introduce new users to the app?
  • Social Features: A friend system and "Verse Collections" for sharing favorite verses.
  • Polishing: Final bug fixes for the first store release.
